Japanese whisky has been making waves recently, with a series of high profile victories in competitive tastings against the traditional holders of the single malt whisky crown, Scotland.

We have been stocking the whiskies of Japan’s Nikka whisky company for over 3 years and rate their two distilleries, the Yoichi up in Japan’s northern island Hokkaido and Miyagikyo located just outside the city of Sendai, as highly as any Scottish distillery. A perfect introduction to their whiskies is the iconic Nikka From the Barrel, a blend of malt and grain whiskies from their two distilleries, married in oak casks and bottled at a robust 51.4% ABV.

The nose is fantastically rich with notes of apricot, mandarin, grapefruit and sandalwood. Deliciously textured on the palate – big flavours of honey, vanilla fudge, rich fruit and spice. A big and bold statement whisky from Nikka.
